Corinium Radio Goes Out and About Across the Cotswolds

Corinium Radio has been out and about at lots of community events over the last few days.

The Cirencester- based community radio station has, you might say, had its fingers in quite a few pies.

And although no pies were actually consumed, the odd mouthful of food more in keeping with the various occasions was enjoyed along the way.

Here’s a flavour of what we’ve been up to in no particular order.

On Friday 16^th June we enjoyed an evening as guests of Cirencester Opportunity Group – a playgroup which is very special to us and which supports children who might need an extra helping hand in a variety of ways.

The occasion was the unveiling of a giant wood sculpture and sensory nature trail in the playgroup’s Beeches Road grounds.

It’s been made possible thanks to the financial support of Cirencester Round Table which has given something like £4,000 towards the project.

The sculpture incorporates lots of woodland creatures and is set to go down a storm with the youngsters who’ll be using it.

It’ll certainly be a valuable future addition to facilities for the playgroup.

Earlier that week we joined in a town walk organised by Cirencester Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the local Civic Society.

Chamber members were given lots of fascinating facts and figures about Cirencester as they were guided around the town.

Said Corinium Radio spokesman Tony Coleman, “It was a real eye-opener.  We walk around the town every day and yet it’s really easy for the stories from history and characters from the past to remain a mystery to us.

“I’m not going to give too much away here, although whole books have been written.  What I would suggest is that if you’re interested in finding out more about the place in which you live you take advantage of one of these Civic Society walks in the future.  I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.”

Talking of history, it was a case of going back to the future for Corinium Radio when we were invited along to the opening of a new railway station in the Cotswolds.

The event, on the 5^th June, saw the formal opening of Hayles Abbey Halt on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

The halt has been built by a team from the heritage railway’s 900-plus volunteers.

It was opened by Lord Neidpath from nearby Stanway House and replaces the original station, which was opened in 1928 and pretty well disappeared after closure in 1960.

The new station will help tourists who want to use the train and then take a short walk to visit the Cistercian Abbey after which it is named.

The railway has many supporters from the Cirencester area and is one of the major tourist attractions in the Cotswolds.
