Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu is a national organisation with clubs in Leicester, London and Cardiff to name a few. It is a self defence martial art that focuses on using understading of balance, leverage, distance to defend yourself rather than direct exchanges of aggression.
The Cirencester club isn´t as large, but meets once a week at CrossFit. Recently, Cirencester proved to be the best location for high grades from other clubs to meet for an AGM and seminar. I was fortunate to be invited to the Sunday seminar and take part. This was a technical lesson, where subtleties of movement were highlighted.
The initial movements were those of break falling to the side, forward and backwards. Afterwards, the fine details of these movements were applied to foot sweeps. It was the avoidance of opposing energy directly that we had to understand. With a break fall, the idea is that you are going down anyway, but manage to redirect the momentum into a safe landing. With a throw, a similar idea is used by breaking the opponents balance after they have also unbalanced themselves.
This was exemplified by how we blocked, redirected or caught punches before a throw was attempted. The commitment of weight by the opponent is what makes it a lot easier to move them.
Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu meets at 19:30 to 21:30 every Monday evening at CrossFit Cirencester. Joint locks, throws and other self defence techniques are drilled for every ability. At £5 a lesson, this offers great value! For more information contact Tom on cirenaiuchi@gmail.com, like on Facebook here or visit http://aiuchi.net/viewclub.php?c=2414
