Smörgåsbord Buffet first Saturday every month... |
Svea is a well regarded Swedish restaurant based in
Cheltenham. Found at 24 Rodney Rd near the High St, the cafe has a group of regular
customers but due to its unique nature it also draws in those from 100s of miles
away. The cosy mixture of good food and authentic culture is reproduced in
the confines of a tastefully decorated unit opposite language school InLingua.
On our Friday night visit, our party of two was instantly
made at home and the attentive staff let us pick from a varied menu. Despite
this we both decided on the risotto. I opted for the Höno starter. A poached
egg on rye bread, the Höno comes with a delicious dill flavoured sauce. It has
a wonderfully aromatic character which would be perfect with white wine. I
however opted for red along with my guest. We both enjoyed the merlot, of which the
smell and taste were equally good.
By the time the risotto arrived we were deep in conversation but the texture and merits of the food disrupted our chat. It was so
enjoyable we had to give some time to appreciate the food. Outwardly appearing as a
small serving, the risotto was so filling it was a struggle to complete it.
This deceptive quality should be understood so one doesn’t dive in too fast!
Having a protein filled starter and main, I didn’t have space for a pudding.
This didn’t stop my colleague from desiring an apple cake.
It tasted good but as I had told her about the Swedish whisky Mackmyra, she
decided it would be a worthwhile experiment to have some poured onto her
pudding. It turned out to be the best choice she had made as the overtones of
whisky brought a warmth to her tummy as the sun went down.
Svea is a highly recommended option for dining out in
Cheltenham. It is especially suited to dining parties going to the Town Hall
for shows due to its close proximity.
