Caring for Your Dog in Hot Weather

Caring for Your Dog in Hot Weather

Quinn, Monty and Brock love the sun, but when they're outside!

The RSPCA runs a yearly campaign to highlight the risks of leaving dogs closed in cars during the warmer months of the year.  Last year, they received 8779 calls reporting incidents of dogs suffering from heat exposure.  This was fewer than in 2014, when over 10,000 incidents were reported, however, a significant number of dogs still actually die from heatstroke or other complications as a direct result of being locked in a vehicle that rapidly overheats.

The best idea is to leave your dog at home where you know they are safe. Dogs that are kept in a hot car will start with Heatstroke.  Even when the outside temp is just 20 degrees, the temperature inside of a closed car can rise to 45 degree celsius or even hotter in a matter of minutes.

Heatstroke can be fatal. Do everything you can to prevent it. If dogs are unable to reduce their body temperature, they will develop heatstroke. The signs to be aware of are: heavy panting, profuse salivation, a rapid pulse, very red gums/tongue, lethargy, lack of coordination, reluctance or inability to rise after collapsing, vomiting, diarrhea  and loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances.

If your dog shows any of these signs, move him/her to a shaded, cool area and contact the Corinium Practice immediately.  Heatstroke can be fatal and should always be treated as an emergency.

Help your dog by doing the following straight away:

·         Shower your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock
·         Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water.
·         Continue to soak your dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that he/she begins to shiver.
·
Once you have cooled your dog down you should bring him/her straight down to us.

Top Tips for Warm Weather;
·         -Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if he/she is feeling hot.

·         -Never leave your dog alone in a car. If you want to take your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly – you won’t be able to leave your dog in the car and you don’t want your day out to be ruined!

·         -If you have to leave your dog outside, you must provide a cool shady spot where he/she can escape from the sun at all times of the day.

·         -Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.

·         -Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day and make it unbearably hot.

·         -Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair.

·         -Dogs need exercise – even when it is hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather.  The ground can also get very hot and can burn their sensitive paw pads.

·         -Dogs can get sunburnt too – particularly those with pink noses or light-coloured fur on their ears.

New Hostel in Ciren Review: The Barrel Store

Evan Burgess discovered the new hostel, perfect for all types of stay in Cirencester...

"The most complicated thing about my stay at the Barrel Store was the child lock on the windows. Everything else was easy!"

Find out more by visiting http://www.newbreweryarts.org.uk.

Are you having family friends to stay? Do you want a good night out without driving home? If you are looking for a way to make the most of your or your friend’s time in Cirencester, the Barrel Store could be the perfect solution. In the centre of town, the new hostel can host up to 43 people in one night. With prices from £24 per night, this offers a dynamic option for those who are passing through at short notice.

There’s plenty of scope to use the Barrel Store for group purposes too. Having a wedding or a business convention? There is no better place to locate yourselves ready for action the next day. With overnight parking in abundance, if you are leaving before 08:00 you may not have to pay for your vehicles keep. Just use the Old Station car park!
Get to work with this fold out desk.

It is an ideal location as a pit stop in a bike tour too. With secure pods to put the bikes away, you can rest assured you’ll be ready to see the Waterparks of South Cerney using your fat for fuel! It probably takes between 15-30 minutes for most people to cycle to South Cerney, and if you’re going in for a day of water sports, that isn’t too long.

I stayed in room 14. At £90 this room can host 3 people, with an en suite shower and toilet there was even a fold out desk. Power sockets were located in three parts of the room. The windows opened into New Brewery Arts alley way. It  was the only point I struggled with something at the Barrel Store. I can say honestly the most complicated thing about my stay at the Barrel Store was the child lock on the windows. Everything else was easy!

Store your bike safely!

Recommend this place to your visiting family and friends, and if you’re lucky you’ll be let into the community room. The decor and ergonomics of the design make for a very efficient stay!

Get Wet With Elite! Prepare Yourself for Tough Mudder August 20th-21st

So you've been going to the gym for yonks and wondering why you're lifting metal and running on a machine... Then you try an obstacle and realise all those years of abstract practice count for nothing! Why? Because no one has been covering you in mud and ice water! Evan Burgess tried out a Tough Mudder training session.

Visit http://elitefit.co.uk/ to get more details!

Elite are raising money for charity whilst teaching you how to make obstacles easier... by getting you tougher! At £8 a session, you're just a panini and latte away from readiness. Helping MS and developing yourself is noble in anyone's book.  Maybe you won't be doing Tough Mudder this August, but if you're in the military, a fireman, a cat burglar or a human, obstacle courses are fun! They challenge your mind and body. If you work in an office they will make you move in ways you might not have utilised since you were in the playground.

Build your confidence!

Don't let the kids have all the fun!

On my first tough mudder session, we had people good at different things. I found running easier whilst jumping a bit harder, whilst our female companion put us all to shame with her pull ups and monkey bars! The master of jumps Damien, made short work of Chesterton's wood blocks. It will take me a while to get to grips with this skill, but there is still six sessions before the 21st to make a break through! A lot of the obstacle navigation is psychological. I knew I was capable of jumping over the logs, but I hadn't got used to the motion so blocked myself. This kind of issue is easy to work on in training, and I am sure once you try a session your weaknesses will be ironed out too!

Find out more from Elite owner Mac about what you're in for with a mud run!

Why do Tough Mudder? Contemplates Mac...
Some people have an affinity to man skirts and big logs. Are you one of them?
 ·        "You will have loads of fun - You’ll end up in a ridiculous amount of mud from head to toe and forget about anything else. Let’s be honest, six miles of tarmac pounding isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Drop the roads for the trails and add in some form of obstacle every kilometre and it’s not so boring.

·        It’s a great day out with friends - It’s difficult to run a traditional running race with friends, as you don’t need friends to complete it and there may be different ability levels across the group. With an obstacle race it’s completely different.

Firstly, you will need help along the way to get over the walls and complete various tasks, so having some mates handy is pretty useful.
Get honed in your rope climbing, water ready to be thrown if you mess up!

Secondly, the obstacles level out the abilities a little. One friend may be a better runner whilst the other could be a pull up junky. Together you can help each other through it.

·        You will have some legendary stories to tell at the end, whether it’s the artic enema, ice bath the crawl through cry-baby, or finishing with the legendary electric curtains at the end.

·        The achievement – You will get no greater feeling of achievement as this course is tough and there are obstacles you will face that look impossible, but you will conquer them.

·        The people are awesome. You will get to meet a wide variety of people who will go out of their way to help. Tough Mudder is a legion and everyone swears to help his or her fellow comrades.

·        It’s not about the time! – There is no time limit or race time for you to complete the course. This is for fun and the experience. It’s the event for the athlete and every day person looking to push their boundaries.

·        It’s all about the headband. You get different colour headbands for each number range you do and collecting them is addictive and a challenge in itself. I am happy to be going for number 7 in Tough Mudder Cirencester on the 21st Aug 2016.

·        Tough Mudder has come to Cirencester - It is on your doorstep, how convenient, no excuses."

On a final note, Mac adds: "Preparing for these events is key to making sure you get the best out of the day and at Elite we have put on outdoor training every Sunday at 11am meeting at the Elite studio in Chesterton lane. All are welcome. Want to take part but have no team? – Join us on Sunday 21st Aug and our team name is Ciren EliteMudders."

Everything will be fine!
